John Varlaro

Dr. Varlaro is a Professor in the Management Department at the Providence Campus of Johnson & Wales University, in Rhode Island, USA. John teaches courses in the areas of Human Resource Management, Organizational Behavior, Strategic Management and International Business. He has served as chair of the management department and as chair of the university faculty council.
He is currently vice president of programs for the 2021 North American Case Research Association (NACRA) Conference. John is an editorial board member for the Philosophy of Management journal and an editorial advisory board member for the South Asian Journal of Business and Management Cases.
John served for 5-years as a member of the HR Certification Institute's certification council, during which he also served as chair. Prior to his appointment to the certification council, he served in multiple roles for HRCI's certification exam development and chaired the working group that wrote HRCI’s Guide to the Human Resource Body of Knowledge, first edition.
John is currently writing the second edition of his textbook, The Practice of Human Resource Management, an electronic textbook that emphases active learning. He has also contributed to other textbooks in human resource management and strategic management.
He has a PhD in Business Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, and an MBA from the University of Hawaii-Manoa. John holds the Senior Professional in HR (SPHR) and Global Professional in HR (GPHR) certifications.
