Johnson & Wales University Offers Free Tax Preparation

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — March 9, 2020 – Johnson & Wales University (JWU) will offer free tax preparation services to individuals who earned $64,000 or less in 2019 through the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

“JWU accounting and finance students who serve on the university’s VITA team get an enriching experiential education opportunity that helps develop their skills while also providing a valuable service to the community,” said Carlos Diaz, associate professor in the College of Business, and faculty advisor for JWU’s VITA team. “For more than 30 years, JWU’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program has remained committed to helping those who may not be able afford the cost of tax preparation fees or have the knowledge or access needed to e-file their own returns.”

Individuals who wish to utilize JWU VITA services must make an appointment with Professor Diaz at (401) 598-1020 or cdiaz@jwu.edu. Those who call to schedule an in person appointment will be informed of the documentation needed to assist them.

The following sessions will take place at 138 Mathewson Street, Providence, RI 02903:

  • March 12 – 4:30-7:30pm
  • March 13 – 10am-1pm
  • March 16 – 4:30-7:30pm
  • March 19 – 4:30-7:30pm
  • March 27 – 10am-1pm
  • March 30 – 4:30-7:30pm
  • April 2 – 4:30-7:30pm
  • April 11 – 10am-1pm
  • April 13 – 4:30-7:30pm

JWU first launched its VITA program in 1991. The program, designed to assist those in need, gives students real world experience filing returns before graduation and familiarity with IRS rules and regulations. JWU VITA team members, who major in accounting and finance, trained with faculty members as they prepared for IRS certification. Upon completion, VITA students are authorized to prepare federal and state returns.
