Program Overview
Research has shown that teaching matters, and that high quality teachers are a key part of providing an equitable education for all students. Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of others? Then earn a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree with a Culinary Arts Education concentration from JWU.
You and your classmates will matriculate as a cohort, following a set sequence of courses, usually 2 or 3 evenings a week each semester. Your coursework includes field-based experiences in public school and JWU culinary classrooms, applying what you’ve learned by working each week with students in a variety of school settings.
As you progress in your fieldwork, you will explore research-based theories and best practices in a real-world setting, first by observing, then working with individual students and small groups, and eventually planning lessons for whole-class instruction.
Upon completion of your coursework and fieldwork, you will be ready for the most dynamic experience of your journey: student teaching in either a high school or university culinary setting, or completing a Culinary Capstone project focused on education. Select the pathway that aligns with your career goals.
When you graduate, you’ll be well prepared to teach in a culinary program or provide educational expertise in a corporate or nonprofit food-related setting.
