Design Your Future

Pursue your passion at JWU Providence, where you’ll turn ideas into impact and be part of a community of innovative thinkers dedicated to shaping the future of design.

In the Design bachelor’s degree program, you’ll explore a range of topics from typography and image-making to user experience and product innovation, learning by doing in hands-on studios that reflect real-world design projects.

In your final year, you’ll complete a 6-credit internship or applied experience. Your year culminates in a capstone portfolio course that ends with our Reveal Showcase, where you present your work to faculty, peers and industry professionals.

You’ll also have the option of narrowing down a focus area that aligns with your career goals. Choose a creative path in:

  • Graphic Design: Build brand identities, design packaging, develop editorial layouts and master typography.
  • Web (UI/UX) Design: Conduct research, establish information architecture, ensure accessibility and design product interfaces.
  • Product Design: Work with materials, model prototypes and develop innovative physical products.

Whether your future career goals include joining a design studio, launching a startup, working for a global brand or building your own venture, your journey begins here.

Focus Areas

  • Graphic Design
  • Web Design
  • Product Design

Brands and organizations rely on compelling visuals to communicate across digital and print platforms, and graphic designers are essential in shaping how messages are seen, understood and experienced. In this focus area, you’ll delve into visual hierarchies, text composition and layout, multi-page layouts, typography, color theory and other key topics.

Digital products are more immersive, intelligent and interconnected than ever before, and web designers are at the forefront of crafting intuitive interfaces and seamless user journeys across web, mobile and emerging platforms. In this focus area, you’ll learn about user interface design, coding languages, interaction design, web accessibility, motion graphics, style guides and other key concepts. You’ll practice using industry-standard design and prototyping software and create a portfolio to showcase your work.

Many of today’s products are increasingly intelligent, operating within digital and physical ecosystems. This focus area dives deeper into ergonomics and user experience, package design, material properties, prototyping, shelf presence, modeling and more. Designers learn to harness cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, and sustainable materials to deliver personalized, interactive and eco-conscious solutions to product creation.

Experiential Education

In JWU’s Design degree, you’ll put learning into action on real projects from day one. Across three focus areas—Graphic Design, Web (UI/UX) Design and Product Design—you’ll work with external partners through Design Team, Design Studio, Web Design Team (client projects), the JWU Launch Pad and community-based organizations. Every course includes an industry-based component (live briefs, client reviews, pro tools or portfolio-ready outcomes), so your work is seen and used beyond the classroom.

Why Study Design at JWU?

  • Build a standout portfolio: Produce increasingly sophisticated, real-world projects that show process and results.
  • Develop your professional identity: Create a cohesive personal brand across your resume, case studies, website and presentation materials.
  • Work with real clients: Create, manage, and present projects to community partners and startups—gaining the feedback, timelines and accountability that mirror professional practice.
  • Hone in-demand skills:
    1. Graphic Design: Branding, typography, publication, packaging, motion, photography/video.
    2. Web (UI/UX) Design: Research, wireframes, prototyping, accessibility, design systems, front-end fundamentals.
    3. Product Design: Materials & processes, CAD, prototyping, ergonomics/human factors, systems thinking.
