PRESS RELEASE

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — June 7, 2022 – Johnson & Wales University has been named a National Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Cyber Defense, a prestigious federal designation that marks the university as a leader in cyber education.

The five-year designation is awarded by the National Security Agency, requiring high standards of excellence and a rigorous application process. The university’s ability to meet the criteria “will serve the nation well in contributing to the protection of National Information Infrastructure,” the agency said in a letter to JWU.

“A highly skilled cybersecurity workforce is a strategic national security advantage,” the letter continued, adding that there is currently a “critical shortage” of such professionals.

Only about 300 colleges and universities have earned the prestigious CAE designation. As part of the program, students will have direct access to exclusive scholarships, grants and internship opportunities. Read more about the CAE program here.

“This designation shows to the wider community what we already know to be true: Johnson & Wales provides a world-class education in cybersecurity and defense,” said Frank Tweedie, Ed.D., the dean of the College of Engineering & Design. “Our students will be the next generation of professionals on the front lines of our nation’s security.”

A certificate will be presented at a formal ceremony at a future date. Learn more about JWU’s cybersecurity program and the CAE designation.
